Acetone is a solvent widely used in industry and in the laboratory because it has the advantage of dissolving in a particularly rapid manner numerous organic species and because it is miscible with water.

Acetone is also the main constituent of some solvents. It is used for example as a solvent to dissolve glue and cellulose fibers or for industrial degreasing.
